Speed up your web browsing with OpenDNS

openDNS

When you type a Web site address like www.pcremix.com into your browser, that domain name needs to be translated into the actual IP address for the computer hosting that site. The job of the DNS server is to take the domain name you type in, look it up against a database of IP addresses, and then return the correct address to your browser so that the site can be accessed.

The speed of your browsing also depends on how fast your DNS server perform it depends on how fast your DNS server translate a domain name into an IP address. Some users with overloaded ISP DNS servers can see delays in multiple seconds before web pages starts to load.

OpenDNS provides free alternative DNS servers that anyone can use with any internet provider. Unlike many national internet providers, OpenDNS’s DNS servers are very fast and reliable. Using OpenDNS servers instead of your ISP servers will help you speed up your internet browsing by cutting down on the delay between resolving a domain name and getting the IP address so your browser can start loading the web page.

Configuring your computer to use OpenDNS servers instead of your ISP’s is a simple change that works in both Windows XP and Windows Vista:

1. Click on the Start Button and type in ncpa.cpl and hit Enter. In Windows XP Click on the Start Button, click Run and then type in ncpa.cpl
2. Right click on your active network connection that you use to connect to the Internet and select Properties.
3. On the Networking / General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) (version 4 on Windows Vista) and hit Properties.
4. On the properties screen, select Use the following DNS server addresses and then type in 208.67.222.222 in the preferred and 208.67.220.220 in the alternate boxes.

I really like openDNS for the most part. Though I don’t use their filters, I’m sure some parents might appreciate a “built in” blocklist service as well. I also like the fact that I can update their cache whenever I have a problem with a site.

does opendns only benefits heavy browsing? how about downloading torrent using torrent client? does it also speed-up torrent download as well as direct download?

  7. Noobz says:

im familiar with seed and peers but not with leechers. What do leechers do? if the torrent has great number of leechers will it speed up or slow down the downloading of torrent?

  8. Noobz says:

set my ip to opendns as you suggested. Im planing also to use it later to filter pr0n sites.

Will this also help boost my online gaming experience? I’m always experiencing slow connection when i play my online games :(

  10. slavezero says:

I don’t think opendns can really help you big when it comes to downloading. torrents on the other hand depends not only on your connections but also on the leechers.

  11. slavezero says:

yes opendns is very effective in filtering unwanted sites.

  12. slavezero says:

in the easiest explanation leechers are the ones downloading the file and the seeders are the source of the file, they have the complete file. leechers can contribute in slowing down your downloads because they don’t upload back.

When you search for torrents always make sure to get the highest seed possible.

Be sure also to seed your download to help out others.
