How To Make A Good Password
This is a continuation on my previous post – “Protecting your account – Choosing the best Password”. This time a more complete and detailed on how you can choose the best password.
There are many password advice out there. It is very much advisable to equip your self with their tips on how you can fully protect your account. Besides, no lists have quite the same recommendations. The list of password DO’s and DONT’s below are the combinations of some of the password tips around the web.
Do NOT:
1. Use your account name or any data as a whole or part of your password.
2. Use any word or name that appears in any dictionary or any references.
3. Use any fictional characters, objects, events or place.
4. Use acronyms.
5. Use alphabetic, numeric or keyboard sequences such as “qwerty” or “12345″ Those characters are usually included in cracking tools password word lists.
6. Use Book titles, movies, poems, essays, songs.
7. Replace letters or numbers with like looking characters. Examples below:
- A -> 4
- a -> 2
- C -> (
- E -> [
- E -> {
- e -> 3
- G -> @
- h -> 4
- I -> 1
- I -> !
- I -> |
- l -> 1
- l -> !
- l -> |
- O -> 0
- S -> 5
- S -> $
- Z -> 5
- 0 -> O
- 3 -> ]
- 3 -> }
8. Use capitalize only the first or the last character of your password.
9. Use only vowels in uppercase.
10. Use only consonants in uppercase.
11. Use any personally related information.
12. Use anything you can imagine being collected into a list.
13. Use a publicly shown example good password.
14. Use great vanity license plates.
15. Translate words to other languages.
16. Repeat any letters, symbols or digits more than once in a row.
DO:
- Use at least 8 to 12 characters.
- Include a digit or punctuation.
- Use a combination of uppercase and lower case character.
- Choose a phrase or combination of words to make the password easier to remember.
- Create two words separated by a non-letter and non-digit character.
- May have non printing characters.
- Use different sets of passwords on different computers.
- Change your password regularly and don’t reuse passwords or make minor variations such a incrementing a digit.
Personally related information
Most people choose a password that are very easy to remember. The most easiest is to create a password that directly related to them. That is the most dangerous thing to do, those are considered poor password choice. Below is a list of related information that you must avoid using or including on your password.
- Names and initials.
- Account name/Username.
- Family members.
- Names or breeds of pets.
- Birthday.
- Family member’s birthdays.
- Vehicle model.
- Hobbies.
- Job title.
- Employer’s name.
- Job related words.
- Name of your friend.
- Street names and numbers, city, county, state or zip code for home, work, family or friends.
- Phone numbers.
- Social security numbers for self or immediate family.
- License plate numbers.
- Birthplace including street address.
- Name of your School.
- Student or employee numbers.

Thank you for those tips. I think I need to change my password now to make it more protected.
Now I will be able to make such a password which will be really tough to break.
Please tell me one thing … is there any such thing which can really detect the password of yours if you have not saved your password in that system.
keyloggers can easily get any of your account password and password cracking tools are also use to hack passwords. Just make sure that you have done all the necessary safety procedures and tools on your machine to protect your accounts.

I think a good password must contain alphanumeric character. it must be a combination of alphabets & numbers. Strength of the password is also depends on its width.
Your tips is very good. Now i have reference to choose password.
I’ve used TrueCrypt but don’t like or need to encrypt large data files or drives. All I need/want is the ability to password protect my PC at boot where it’s also protected against the usual work arounds like entering into Safe Mode, etc. Unless TrueCrypt can be configured to just password protect (I haven’t figured out how), can you point me to a program that can?

Pretty cool tips. I have two passwords memorized – one that uses the tips above (for really secure things) and a simple password (for just basic accounts).
The above technique is similar to mine. Firstly, I try to look for a word or phrase whose letters are all different, such as “blue mango” which consist of 9 different characters, then I assign each character to 1-9, while the number 0 could be an “X” or anything. I hope this could also give you another way to make a good password
I think one of the good way to pick a password that’s easy to remember and hard to guess is to start with a common phrase. Then make your password from the first letter or the last letter of each word.

Good password really require for protect your account. I mostly use combination of numeric, upper & lower case characters password. These are very helpful information.
I think more than 8 characters is pretty good. Make a combination between numeric and alphabetic. make a simple word to create a password such for example iw4ntt034t.
Alphanumeric is the best with the addition of small and capital letters.
